Up & Up therapy Lamp Case Study

Project Scope

900,000 Canadians are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) per year. Mood levels and mental illnesses get worse due to limited sunlight in winter. This affects mood, appetite, motivation, and sleep patterns. Light Therapy acts as a first-line treatment that uses a light source that shines 12" away from a user's body. Competing products usually look out of place and lack user-centered development. They are often quite expensive as well. We decided to design a light that is both pleasing to look at and user friendly.

The Project

Up & Up is an OLED light that emits natural illumination to mimic sunlight to improve mood. It uses LG's proprietary flexible OLEDs as a central focus of the design. Up & Up has human-centered controls and features that give users a sense of ownership. It also gives people with mental disorders comfort and control. It also reduces eye strain by not having UV, glare, heat, or blue light. The sleek look integrates well into any space without looking like a medical device.

This project was an entrant for the LG RED DOT competition in 2017.
